A is for Antlers

A is for Antlers
In honor of National Craft Month I am taking part in a series put on by Stephanie from Crafting in the Rain called Craft Month A-Z.  Stephanie has gotten together with a bunch of awesome bloggers and each of those bloggers will share a craft tutorial based on a letter of the alphabet.  I chose A because A is Awesome and Amazing and I already had a tutorial in mind that I have been wanting to share.  About a year ago I pinned this image to my Chalkboard Pinterest board.  I thought it was pretty neat! I pinned it and there it sat, collecting digital dust.   It wasn’t until my son started to become enthralled with deer that I remembered the chalkboard antler print.  His birthday was coming up and it was the perfect time to try and make some chalkboard antler art.
How to make Antler Chalkboard Art
I first made a paper antler and cut it out using my Silhouette Cameo.  If you don’t have a Silhouette or other electronic cutter, you could easily free had some antlers onto a large sheet of paper.  My chalkboard is pretty large so I needed a big paper antler.  I had some 12×24 paper but I didn’t have a 12×24 mat to put it on.  I improvised and taped two 12×12 Silhouette mats together.  Worked like a charm.  If you have ever wanted to make your own 12×24 cutting mat, all you need is a piece of masking or painters tape.
Trace Paper Antlers
After I cut out my paper antler, I traced it onto my chalkboard with chalk.  Flip the paper over and you have the mirror image of the antler for the other side.  I used a tape measure to make sure my antlers were centered on the chalkboard.
Fill Antlers in with Chalk
Next I just filled in the antler outline with chalk.   I blew away the leftover chalk dust.  I did it outside because there was a ton of chalk dust! I wasn’t skimping on the chalk!
Chalkboard Antler Art
The Chalkboard Antlers are sitting above our fireplace mantel.  They were a great addition to my son’s deer birthday party that he had last weekend.  They are also a great way to incorporate the deer trend in your home decor.  If you hanging a big ol’ deer head is not in your comfort zone, try making these chalkboard antlers!

  1. I never would have guessed that’s chalk–it turned out so cool! And it looks great on your mantel!

  2. Love this! Actually my husband does have a big deer head he wants to hang in our living room. Somehow I convinced him to take it to his office for now. This might be a nice compromise! haha! Awesome tutorial! 🙂

Is it a real deer? My sister and brother-in-law are big hunters so they have a few deer, elk and bison heads in their home. I felt like a phony wanna-be last year when I wanted to put it up this chalkboard deer antlers but now with the whole deer home decor trend I guess I am good to go!

  3. So cute, Lisa! I love it- we are big on the antler and deer trend 🙂 Just darling!
