Travel Gifts for Boys

DIY Lego Travel Case
I have had a few years of experience under my belt making gifts for my girls. So on our last road trip to Disneyland I whipped up several travel gifts for my girls. The ideas just came flying in. Then my thoughts turned to my little buddy and travel gifts for little boys were harder to think up.  I looked around and found two ideas that I thought my son would like and keep him occupied on the drive. Candy Alphabet Travel Game

Candy Alphabet Travel Game

This post should probably be titled Candy Alphabet Travel Game Prototype 1.   I have had this idea for quite a while.   It is a take on one of those chocolate advent calendars but  with different candy behind each door.   Trouble is, it was just an idea flitting around in my head and I hadn’t had a chance to really ponder it and explore different options of how to put it together.  As our Disney trip was fast approaching, I knew I wanted to make this but I didn’t know how.  This is the first prototype that I came up with and it has some flaws but the general idea of it worked out great.

I used my Silhouette CAMEO and the print and cut feature to make the front template.  Each Letter had a door around it.  The top and bottom of the door were cut with dash marks and the right side of the door was a straight cut line.  I also added a little trapezoid cut out to make it easier for my kids to open the doors.   If I make this again, I would do longer dash marks because the doors didn’t open cleanly, they kind of ripped when they were opened.

Candy Alphabet Travel Game TutorialOnce I had the front made I went to the store and picked out a variety of little candies to put behind each door.   Now do you remember seeing those candy lei’s that people give at graduations and stuff? That is the inspiration I used for helping the candy to stay put behind each door.  I took some plastic wrap and made a little nest around the candy.  I left one side of the candy exposed and put that up against each door.  I twisted the candy wrap in between candies and taped it onto the backside of the front paper.   The back part was tricky.  I took an 8 1/2 x 11 piece of paper and cut two borders of dashed lines around it.  Then I folded one up and the other over to form a sort of box with a lip.  I laid the Alphabet candy sheet on top of it and taped the sheet around the edges.  Not the best way to do it but I was running out of time to experiment some more.

DIY Paper Advent Calendar

Sorry for the poor photo, it was starting to get dark out so the lighting was really bad in the car.  Now everyone knows the alphabet travel game.  You start with A and look outside as you drive for each letter in the alphabet.  Same goes with this game.  The kids started with A and as soon as they saw the letter A, they could open up the A door and eat the candy that was inside.  Next they moved to B and so on.  My younger daughter had a harder time with it and so she just opened the doors of whatever letter she saw, not it order.  My 2 year old son simply opened all the doors and ate candy to his hearts content.    Given that this idea is super cool but the execution of it needs some tweaking, I would love to hear from you on how you would do it! What ideas do you have for making this DIY Candy Advent Calendar/ Candy Alphabet Game better? I think it would be fun to use for holidays or other occasions as well but I want to think of a better way to do it.  If you have a suggestion, leave it in the comments!
