String Art from Silhouette Rhinestone Template

I know full well that Summer time is making its way out of town and back to school is in full blogger swing.  I do have thoughts of back to school in the inner cobwebs of my mind but right now, Summer is all I can think of.  You see, my kids haven’t had the Summer I was hoping they would have.  Things got put on hold about 2 months ago when my husband hurt his back.  Things progressively got worse and worse and what in the world is going on, someone please help us worse.  Things culminated with me crying in the neurosurgeons office after a week of trying to get surgery scheduled with little luck and so I drove to the office myself, updated MRI’s in hand and met with the surgeon without an appointment.  From there we went to the ER and had the surgery that afternoon.  We are finally on the up & up here but alas, we are facing only 4 more weeks of Summer before school starts.  That means we needed to pack a bunch of things from our Bucket List into the last few dwindling weeks of Summer time.

Instax Poloroid Picture Bucket List

To make things more fun I made a Bucket list patterned after one I saw from Nicole on the Silhouette Blog.  I used the Christmas advent calendar and cut out some paper tabs.  I clipped the tabs on the advent calendar.  Each time we do something off our bucket list, we take a picture of it with my Instax camera and clip it up on our Bucket List Board.

Summer Bucket List Decor

I also needed a little something extra to add a fun decoration to our Summer Bucket List display.  I turned to an unlikely source as a template for my Summer String Art.  My Silhouette CAMEO’s rhinestone setting!

You can give any shape or text a rhinestone effect using the Rhinestones setting in the Design Edition of the Silhouette Studio software.  I started with the word SUMMER that you see above and turned it into a rhinestone template.   I thought that the template would be a great guide for making some string art.  Some things that I considered when making the rhinestone template for string art was that I wanted the holes to be as big as possible and I wanted them to be spaced far enough apart.

Highlight your shape and then:

1. Under the Rhinestones setting, check the Edge effect.

2. Adjust the rhinestone size to 20ss

3. Increase the rhinestone spacing

Now that you designed your string art template, cut it out on cardstock paper.  Get some nails, wood, string and tape.  Tape the paper template onto the piece of wood.  Hammer in a nail wherever there is a hole in the template.  Brace yourself for A LOT of hammering.  Maybe even do yourself a favor and don’t choose such a long word.  My stubbornness got me through all the hammering and then I pulled my template off.  It caught in some places but for the most part was easy to remove.  Now tie your string onto the start of your first letter and start winding it around the nails.  I went over each part of each letter multiple times.  Tie off your string at the end of each letter and start afresh with the next letter.

I am hoping that by the end of the Summer, we will have a whole bunch of pictures and tabs that they will practically make themselves into a fun book to remember.  We will have a summer yet!

I really love my Designer Edition Silhouette software! Not only can it do rhinestones, but it can do a bunch of other things:

  • Ability to open, manipulate, and cut .svg files
  • Rhinestone tools to convert designs into rhinestone templates and create your own rhinestone designs
  • Sketch tools to convert designs into several styles of sketchable art
  • Creative knife tools to allow you to clip designs using different patterns
  • Enhanced eraser set to modify designs with more precision
  • Built-in ruler and guide lines for precise alignment and drawing
  • Layers support (including ability to cut by layer)
  • PDF import
  • Nesting feature to allow you to arrange cuts as efficiently as possible—a scrapper’s dream!
  • Shadow tool—allows you to add a drop shadow to printable designs

I actually bought mine almost solely for the enhanced eraser function (which I love) but I am extremely happy with the other things it can do, especially the Rhinestone settings.

I used the rhinestone settings as is when I made my daughter a sparkly peter pan collar shirt.

DIY Summer Reading Bookmarks

I also used the rhinestone setting when I made these hand stitched bookmarks for kids.

Now is a FABULOUS time to get the Silhouette Studio Designer Edition software because Silhouette is offering it at 40% off!! Score!! I bought it at full price and I still think it was worth what I paid for it!
