The party that I threw for my son’s 2nd birthday party evolved quite a bit. It actually started last year and was going to be a Little Man first birthday party. I made some ties, some mustaches and some other decorations for it. Things ended up getting really busy and I had to make the choice to bag it. We celebrated with just cake and ice cream. It was actually quite nice. This year I wanted to throw him a party. He and his sister have birthdays just a few weeks apart which makes it hard on a party planning mamma but I was determined not to let another year pass by with him getting the short end of the stick. In an effort to help with the planning and since I didn’t have much time, I decided to use some of the things that I had made for his party last year and combine them with something that he is really into this year. Deer are my son’s favorite animals. And so the “Dashing Deer” party idea was born. Each of the deer would be wearing bow ties to tie in the two party themes.
This is the party invitation that I made. You can see the full tutorial for it over at the Silhouette Blog. Basically I printed out the outline of the deer and then watercolored it in. I also added a yellow felt bow.
You may notice the DIY white foam deer head from the makeover tutorial earlier this week. He was the focal point of the trail mix bar.
The trail mix bar was the main component of the dashing deer birthday party. Each party goer got a take-out box and were able to fill it with goodies from the trail mix bar. Here are the trail mix bar food ideas we used:
M & M’s
The trail mix bar was a huge hit! I thought that the kids would load up on the sweet treats but they actually did a good job of mixing it up. Plus it helped that the scoops were tiny :). I tied a Happy Trails To You tag on each of the trail mix boxes and adorned them with a dashing deer.
I tried to incorporate the two themes in the birthday cake by using the mini tie cake banner that I had previously made and then adding a deer figurine with a yellow felt bow tie and a corrugated kraft paper number 2.
I also made some individual desserts for everyone. The recipe for those will be coming up probably next week!
The last of the decorations was the chalkboard antler art that I shared and also a happy birthday banner with a 3d deer head separating the Happy from the Birthday.
All in all I really liked how the party turned out! I think combining the two party themes Little Man + Deer made for a better party!
Thanks for stopping by!
