Throwing a party can be expensive! Especially if you try and emulate all the cute party ideas that are out there. Sure, if I had a gazillion dollars to spend on each of my kids birthday parties then they would be lavish and styled to the extreme. I would buy all the party favors and decorations and food and it would be no big deal. Back to real life and I don’t have a gazillion dollars or even a hundred dollars to spend on a birthday party so I have to get creative. One of the things that I have a hard time spending money on is nice gift bags for party favors. I wanted to actually have bags with handles and the cheapest I could find them for was 2 for $1 at the dollar store. That isn’t too bad until you have tons of kids and then that starts to add up. So I have been making my own party favor bags!
First start by gathering your supplies. I got the party favor bags from a dollar store called Honks. There were 12 bags in a pack so 12 for $1 is not too bad a price! For the handles I used this paper floral wire (except mine didn’t have wire and I can’t find what they are called!) that I got from a yard sale but I have also used rope and ribbon so you can use whatever you have on hand and then some Duck Tape as well.
Fold each bag over to the size that you want.
Cut your handle material to the size you want. Use the Duck tape to secure the handle to the inside of the bag. For this bag I did two small rectangles of Duck tape because I thought it kind of looked like a horseshoe and it was a My Little Pony Equestria Girls party after all.
When I made these for my daughters Halloween party, punched holes in the bags and fed the rope through them and then I used a long strip of black Duck tape going all the way across the back and front to hold it on. Depending on the material you use, the folded over edges of the bag may want to start opening up again. If they do, use some double sided tape to secure them.
For the My Little Pony Equestria Girls party, I made yarn tassels for each bag and a reversible Thanks for Coming tag. Whenever I do character parties for my kids I try and keep them as “characterless” as possible and just focus on the colors and the things that the character does ie. horseshoes, cutie marks etc. That way your party is a little more classy and a little less cartoon-y.
The girls each filled their My Little Pony Equestria Girls party favor bags with the character treats I made from this post. So there you have it. A real cheap way to make cute DIY party gift bags!
